Unit Development - Staircase Bedroom

Narrative

The complex will be a series of fragmented buildings that respond to the surrounding site, which is encircled by NYCHA buildings, the Williamsburg Bridge, and the FDR drive. Circulation will be a key component in the building, as it involves a staircase and landing system that threads through the fragments, creating not only passageways but also communal gathering spaces that will become the core of the project — such as, kitchens, study rooms, student lounges, event spaces, music practice rooms, art rooms, laundry rooms, a cafe, and bathrooms. This thread will wrap around housing units that are more private spaces for student residents and that provide several options for students with different financial and physical needs. The aim of this project is to provide sanctuary for international and national students by providing them with the resources to feel included, involved, and most importantly, safe.
